March 2008 Member of the Month - Susan Stephens

March's member of the month is Susan Stephens. Susan was born in Norfolk VA but didn't stay there for long. Her father Art Davis, prior Community Board Member, was in the Navy. Being in a military family, Susan was able to travel around the country. During high school she was a forgein exchange student in Peru for a year. She attended college in Orange County CA and obtained her BA in Public Relations. Susan is from a large family of 6 siblings, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Susan joined the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad in March of 1999. When she joined she had worked as a physician staffing coordinator, then later in retail management. Susan revealed during her initial membership interview that she wanted to become involved in medicine and help the community.

Susan is currently attending school while working part time at a physicians office. She just graduated as an Certified Medical Assistant.

Susan has traveled extensively during her adult life. Visiting places such as Iceland, Ireland, India, Central Europe and a Carribean Cruise to the Mayan Ruins. Susan was with a group of friends, including Al Willis, on the cruise. While at the Mayan Ruins they encountered an elderly male who fell and subsequently sustained a head injury with extensive bleeding. Using her training, Susan stopped the bleeding and with help, got him to the cruise ship for medical treatment. If not for thier quick thinking, this person could have bleed to death, since the closest hospital was 3.5 hours away. They have been nominated for a valor award throught the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce. Susan also enjoys ice skating and can be found at the Ashburn Ice House when she's not at work, going to school, or spending time at the rescue squad.

In 2007, Susan contributed 368 duty hours, running 41 calls and served on the Board of Directors. Her history of responsibilities have included being a dedicated board member for many years, Vice President under Steve Porter, responsible for uniforms, crew leader, Chair of the Banquet Committee, and most recently coordinator of the afternoon ice skating event in February. I am pleased to report that she is once again a state certified EMT B. Because of Susans' committment to Loudoun Rescue and our community, Susan is Marchs' member of the month.
