October 2008 Members of the Month - AJ Coston & Steve Duffitt
The Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad would like to recognize two individuals for its October Member of the Month Award. This month both Andrew “AJ” Coston and Steve Duffitt are the recipients.
They have some similarities that are worthy of mentioning. Neither one lived in Loudoun County at the time they joined our department. They can both be found on the Rescue Saturday nights. Most importantly, the reason they are Octobers Member of the Month, they both showed up on Friday, September 5th to cross staff the Rescue and boats at 6pm. We were upstaffing due to tropical storm Hannah. The next morning there wasn’t a qualified boat crew to relieve them so they both graciously stayed making their total commitment to the community a whopping 36 hours that weekend!
AJ was raised in McLean, Virginia. He has a younger sister who’s 18 named Mandy. AJ is in his second year at Shenandoah University where he started off studying Nursing but plans on changing to a Paramedic program. He has worked part time at Loudoun INOVA Cornwall as a Patient Care Technician. He enjoys snowboarding, running and baseball.
AJ joined Loudoun Rescue in October of 2004 as a Junior member. Why join Loudoun Rescue, when he is a resident of Fairfax County and there are multiple stations in between? He will tell you, he thought we were Loudoun County’s fire department with a county wide squad. Despite that, he has been a valuable member. He was awarded the Loudoun Volunteer Services 2007 Outstanding Public Safety Youth Volunteer Award. He has taken EMT B, Firefighter 1 and 2, Fire Instructor 1, and Fire Officer 1 within the last few years. He has been our Special Operations Sergeant over the last 2 years. AJ is responsible for the bike team and can be found at larger events providing that service. Up until recently he was running duty both Tuesday and Saturday nights. While he was off from school during the summer (June-August) AJ clocked in 410 hours. This is not including the volunteer classes he was also taking. He also volunteers with a fire department in Winchester while he is at school.
Stephen Duffitt joined Loudoun Rescue in March of 2003 as a Senior member. He has a younger brother named Mike. His parents, Robert and Barbara Duffitt, have been married for 42 years. He was raised in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Steve has a Siberian Husky named Justice. His girlfriend Janet is from New York. Steve attended PG Community College and the University of Maryland at College Park Fire and Rescue Institute where he studied Criminal Justice and Fire/Rescue/Homeland Security Courses. During his down time he enjoys sking in the winter and going to the beach in the summer. Steve goes to Florida in October for vacation every year and to New York multiple times per year. Steve has been employed by Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Communications Division for 6 years. Steve also volunteered at Allentown Road Volunteer Fire Department in Fort Washington Maryland. He has been a member there for 14 years.
Thank you both for your commitment to Loudoun Rescue.
